Our Assumptions About Health

We understand health as broadly defined.  It includes our bodies, minds, spirits, relationships, social structures, the environment, and more!  Almost everything in our lives impacts our health.  Here are the basic assumptions that we make about health to guide the work that we do:

  1. Social Determinants: Our health is impacted by social conditions—like how much money you have, your race, your educational level, whether you are an immigrant, etc.
  2. Loving Community: Loving Communities are healthy communities.  When people are treated fairly, when people have good relationships with each other, when people feel like they have some control over their destiny, they are healthier.
  3. Transformation: Getting to Loving Community/Healthy Community requires transformation—fundamentally changing the way we think and act.  Personal transformation and community transformation are connected.
  4. Role of Faith: People of faith are critical leaders in creating and nurturing personal and community transformation.
