SUMMARY:Youth Prevention: What Works - When and Why
DESCRIPTION:Youth Prevention - What Works – When and Why Host: Illinois Coalition Against Tobacco May 29, 10:30 – 11:30 am CST Guest Presenters: Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research Steven Sussman, PhD Professor, Preventive Medicine and Psychology University of Southern California For more than 10 years there was a steady decline in youth smoking rates, but recently declines are negligible and appear to be stalled. Preventing youth tobacco use is complex and requires a multi-component approach . What works for teens, may not work for kids in middle school and what works today, doesn’t work 100 percent of the time. Dr. Sussman, a principal investigator in several prevention programs, will briefly describe the research on available programs and outline the key components needed to counteract tobacco industry influence. SUMMARY:Convenience Stores - How Big Tobacco Targets Youth
DESCRIPTION:Convenience Stores - How Big Tobacco Targets Youth Host: Illinois Coalition Against Tobacco May 24, 10 -11 am CST Guest Presenters: Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids Meg Riordan, Director, Policy Research Ann Boonn, Research Manager This webinar focuses on the report, Deadly Alliance: How Big Tobacco and Convenience Stores Partner to Market Tobacco Products and Fight Life-Saving Policies. As other forms of tobacco marketing have been restricted, tobacco companies now spend more than 90 percent of their marketing budget — nearly $10 billion a year — to advertise and promote tobacco products in the retail environment. Tobacco companies pay stores billions to ensure that cigarettes and other tobacco products are advertised heavily, displayed prominently and priced cheaply to appeal to both kids and current tobacco users. In this webinar, participants will learn about how the tobacco industry utilizes convenience stores to maximize youth exposure and to prevent passage of tobacco policies. SUMMARY:Faith-Based Caregiver Curriculum Facilitator Training
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars! Caring Together, Living Better (CTLB) is offering a one-day facilitator training for our new faith-based training curriculum. As a trained facilitator, you will be able to help spouses, adult children, neighbors and other informal caregivers of older adults better manage the challenges of caregiving. The training program for caregivers has six sessions that can be taught to a group in about two hours each or the materials can be used to guide conversations with individual caregivers. This is a wonderful asset for any church older adult/caregiving ministry. CTLB’s new curriculum was created by adapting “Caregiving Relationships,” a program developed by the University of Illinois Extension. The program includes topics such as effective communication, managing emotions and accessing community resources. CJE SeniorLife worked with the curriculum developers to incorporate the faith-based exercises CJE developed with assistance from the CTLB Leadership Council. The new version of the curriculum allows caregivers to explore how their faith can serve as a resource for self care. The facilitator training will be held in Harvey on May 24 from approximately 8:30a.m.-4:30p.m. Please contact Sharon Stolz at sharon.stolz@ageoptions.org or (708)271-6251 to register.

SUMMARY:CROSSwalk to Remember Murdered Youth
DESCRIPTION:What is CROSSwalk? CROSSwalk is a four-mile Holy Week procession across the heart of the city to remember murdered youth and connect participants with opportunities to protect children, mitigate violence and support families struggling with these issues. CROSSwalk is not a protest march. It is a vigil, one tied directly to follow-up action. CROSSwalk will take place on Monday, April 2, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at St. James Cathedral (Huron and Wabash). It will travel through the Loop to a stop at Daley Plaza (Washington and Dearborn), proceed to Old St. Patrick’s Church (Adams and Des Plaines) and end at the lawn outside Stroger Hospital. Participants are welcome to walk the entire route, walk part of it, or simply join us for short programs at any of the stops along the way. Buses will also be available to help transport people from place to place. Procession Stops and Times 1st stop 5:30 St. James Cathedral (Huron & Wabash) 2nd stop 6:15 Daley Plaza (Washington & Dearborn) 3rd Stop 7:00 Old St. Pat's Church (Adams & Des Plaines) Last Stop 8:15 Stroger Hospital lawn (Harrison &Wood) Walk the entire route, walk part of it, or simply join us for short programs at any of the stops along the way. A limited number of bus seats will be available to help transport those who cannot walk. You must register and check the bus box to reserve a place on a bus. What’s the genesis of the event? CROSSwalk began as a conversation about honest, relevant liturgy that ties the pain and loss of Christian Holy Week with the reality of everyday life in Chicago. At its core, CROSSwalk is that liturgy. But, it has also grown into a broad outreach effort, one we hope will link new organizations, individuals and communities with those that have long been active on the issue of violence and youth. What are the goals? Our primary goals are threefold: To heighten awareness of the more than 600 young people killed in Chicago since 2008 by engaging individuals and institutions, and encouraging them to get involved. To create new partnerships that advance the ongoing work surrounding violence. To link CROSSwalk participants to each other and to programs and organizations in need of their time, energy and resources. Through it all, we want to remember...to reflect and mourn...to express outrage and pray for those who have been lost. More information? For more information, go to www.crosswalkchicago.org or contact Jack at All Saints Chicago, at jack@allsaintschicago.org or 708-380-0056.

Breland-Noble, Ph.D., M.H.Sc. Director, The AAKOMA Project, Duke University Medical Center This lecture is free and open to the public but registration prior to Monday, April 9, 2012 is required. To register click here. For additional information, please visit the Ruth Knee Lecture page. This lecture will illustrate the role of initiatives linking African American/Black Faith communities and universities in creating health equity for diverse adolescents. Given the central role of faith communities in African American/Black culture, Breland-Noble will describe the benefits to be derived from training in Faith Based Health Promotion and Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) for use with African American/Black communities. Utilizing the Faith Based Health Promotion, CBPR, community engagement literature (e.g. Bell & McKay, 2004; Gibson & Abrams, 2003; Gilliss et al., 2001; Smith et al., 2007; Thompson et al., 1996; Yancey, Ortega, & Kumanyika, 2006) and data from her own studies, Breland-Noble will describe the importance of “intensive-preliminary interaction” with community members and immersion in the local environment. She will further describe the relevant trends beckoning researchers interested in creating and maintaining positive regard in faith communities. Finally, Breland-Noble will describe scientifically rigorous approaches to community engaged work by focusing on a concept called The Seven Field Principles of community psychiatry (Bell & McKay, 2004; Flay BR, Snyder F., & Petraitis J., 2009). The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the benefits and challenges associated with pursuing a research career blending traditional and community engaged science with a focus on Faith Based Health Promotion. Participants will gain the following learning objectives: Participants will identify aspects of Faith Based Health Promotion relevant for conducting research with African American/Black youth and families. Participants will gain knowledge about theories of community engagement in clinical research. Participants will learn approaches to the application of tested community engagement practices in clinical research. About the presenter: Dr. Alfiee M. Breland-Noble is the Director of The AAKOMA Project (African American Knowledge Optimized for Mindfully-Healthy Adolescents) and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Duke University Medical Center. She completed her residency training at Duke University and a post-doctoral research training program in health services research at the Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Breland-Noble received her doctoral degree in counseling psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Masters in Counseling from New York University and her Bachelor of Arts in English from Howard University. In 2010, she completed a Masters degree in Health Sciences (clinical research) at the Duke School of Medicine. SUMMARY:Faith and Public Health Leadership Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Faith and Community Health Transformation is partnering with The Center for Public Health Practice at the UIC School of Public Health to offer a Faith and Public Health Leadership Institute. This Institute brings teams of faith and public health leaders together to think and plan more deeply about how to address the root causes of health disparities. (“Leader” is broadly defined, including formal and informal, institutional and community, clergy and lay.) We are particularly focusing on those working in HIV/AIDS, Emergency Preparedness, Chronic Disease, and Food Access. Ideally, we’d like for teams of faith leaders and public health leaders to have some experience of working together already, but that’s not mandatory and interested individuals are also welcome. Cost is $100 for all 5 sessions. Sessions will be held at the UIC Campus from 9am to 2pm on the following dates: Tuesday, April 24, 2012 Tuesday, May 22, 2012 Tuesday, June 26, 2012 Tuesday, July 24, 2012 Tuesday, August 14, 2012 Click here for more detailed information. SUMMARY:Uncovering New Funding Sources for Faith-Based Organizations
DESCRIPTION: CD Publications Presents... Ever since the White House launched its Office of Faith-Based & Community Initiatives, many faith-based grantseekers still haven't figured out how to successfully tap the many public and private funding resources available to them. If you're one of those grantseekers, we encourage you to join next Thursday, March 8th from 2:00 to 3:30pm Eastern Time for our newly-updated, information-packed audioconference: "Uncovering New Funding Sources for Faith-Based Organizations in 2012" Based on the turnout from our December 2011 audioconference on faith-based funding, and requests from attendees, we are bringing you this all-new event filled with funding insights and the latest trends in 2012 funding opportunities not covered in past events. Why You Should Attend: Today's funding environment is focused on partnerships. Some of the most critical are those involving faith-based groups. Federal grantmaking agencies have faith-based offices and agendas, and faith-based partnerships are increasingly important among foundations as well. This audioconference will help you position your organization to get the most out of faith-based and community funding opportunities in 2012 -- and beyond. Your Presenters: Veteran grants analysts Ray Sweeney and Frank Klimko will offer 90-minutes of in-depth information designed to help you find--and win--the funding your organization needs for critical community programs. Both are quite familiar with both federal and foundation funding for faith-based initiatives. In fact, few others are as qualified in this area as they are. Here's Just Some of What You'll Learn You'll receive a thorough overview of how federal and private funders operate, what they look for in grant applications, and the criteria they use in deciding which projects they will fund. We'll show you how to... Track down scores of funding opportunities for your faith-based organization, including hard-to-find options; Avoid funding pitfalls that can derail your program before it's even launched; Get a handle on exactly what funders are looking to fund; Understand the latest funding trends, including properly incorporating them into your submissions; Establish effective partnering relationships that will enable your organization to tap into the billions of dollars available for faith-based projects; And so much more. Whether you're with a religious institution wanting to know the in's and out's of faith-based funding, or a faith-based social services agency seeking to expand your funding horizons, this audioconference will show you everything you need to know about finding and winning faith-based grants. For just $189, your entire program staff can gather around a speaker phone and take advantage of expert insights and guidance especially tailored to your needs. And we'll leave plenty of time for you to ask our experts questions about issues of specific concern to your organization. But you need to act quickly as only a limited number of slots are available and, as is the case with all of our audioconferences, they tend to fill up fast. When you register to attend, you'll also receive these Special Bonuses: Our presenters will continue answering your questions, at no additional cost, for a full 30 days after this audio conference to ensure we address all your needs. We know of no other grant presenters who offer this unique promise. All attendees will receive a FREE 3-month subscription to our Federal and Foundation Assistance Monitor as part of their registration. Your sponsor is CD Publications, a Washington, DC-based publisher covering Congress and the agencies since 1961. If for any reason you are not fully satisfied with this auidioconference, just let us know. Your satisfaction is our priority, and we've stood behind what we do for more than 50 years. Here's How to Register And Get More Information: Register online at http://www.cdpublications.com/store/239 Call our Customer Service Department toll-free at 1-800-666-6380 Email us at subscriptions@cdpublications.com Can't Attend but Want to Take Advantage of the Information? You can purchase a CD recording of the entire event for the same price, just $189. Or, you can buy the CD in addition to attending the audio conference for just $50 more. CDs will be mailed about two weeks after the event.

SUMMARY:2012 Training to Lead "Just Eating?: Practicing Our Faith at the Table"
DESCRIPTION:January 28th, 2012 Training to lead Just Eating?: Practicing Our Faith at the Table. **This training will include the edition adapted for African American food and culture. Just Eating? is a 7-session curriculum for congregational discussion groups exploring the links between the way we eat and the way we live. Scripture, prayer, and stories from our local and global community are woven together to explore four key aspects of our relationship with food: the health of our bodies; the challenge of hunger; the health of the earth that provides our food; and the ways we use food to extend hospitality and enrich relationships. Location: Emmanuel Temple AME Church 1401 Newcastle, Westchester, IL 10 am – 1:30 pm, lunch included. Take this opportunity to reconnect with food as a practice of faith, health and ritual, and gain the knowledge to lead the program in your own community. Includes 4 hours of training and lunch, and costs $15. Participants leave with a Leader Guide, Participant Guide and Middle School Curriculum. Click here to view the curriculum on-line.

SUMMARY:National Disaster Recovery Framework Webinar
DESCRIPTION:DHS Center for Faith-based & Neighborhood Partnerships A Center of the White House Office of Faith-based & Neighborhood Partnerships FEMA’s Community Preparedness Webinar Series presents... Introduction to the National Disaster Recovery Framework Join the webinar Tuesday November 8th at 1:45 p.m. EST by CLICKING HERE No registration is required, and the webinar is free Due to the projected high volume of this webinar we are asking you to join the webinar 15 minutes prior to the start time. Click on the above link to login to the webinar at 1:45 p.m EST. The webinar will begin promptly at 2 p.m. Join us for a webinar about the recently released National Disaster Recovery Framework (NDRF). The NDRF defines how we will work together as a nation to best meet the disaster recovery needs of individuals, families, communities and states. A collaborative process, involving leaders from the Whole Community, was used for developing the NDRF and is intended to provide a clear picture for all involved in disaster recovery operations. The NDRF is focused on how to restore, redevelop, and revitalize the infrastructure, housing, health, social, economic, natural and environmental components of the community in the aftermath of a disaster by ensuring inclusiveness, leadership, coordination and recovery planning at all levels of government. The NDRF is based on the principle that all emergency management partners, including the private sector, non-profit organizations, faith-based organizations, individual citizens, as well as local, state, tribal and federal government agencies have a role to play in the recovery process. And in catastrophic scenarios, leveraging resources of the Whole Community to meet the needs of disaster impacted communities is essential . Join the webinar to learn more about how the National Disaster Recovery Framework provides a more inclusive, collaborative and comprehensive approach to address disaster recovery issues and challenges. Regards, FEMA Individual & Community Preparedness Division www.citizencorps.gov Follow us on Twitter: @Citizen_Corps “FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.”

SUMMARY:Hunger Banquet
DESCRIPTION:Are you hungry for a better world? While nearly 1 billion people suffer today from starvation, many of us hunger for a world in which all have enough. Naturally, we also hunger for the meaning of it all. We invite you to collaborate in a unique way to relieve hunger in our own community. Interfaith Impact, a grassroots Oak Park/River Forest community interfaith effort, sparked by One Chicago, One Nation Community Ambassador Susan Lucci, will host a Hunger Banquet at Dominican University beginning at 6PM the evening of October 6, 2011. The Banquet will take place in the Aula Auditorium of Dominican’s Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division, River Forest. Here is a link to directions: http://www.dom.edu/contact-us/dominican-locations/Priory-Campus.html. Based on an Oxfam model, a Hunger Banquet is an orchestrated dinner designed to demonstrate the global disparity in food security and to raise awareness about world hunger. Speakers will motivate participants to engage in local efforts to relieve hunger, followed by a reflection/interfaith dialogue. Between now and then, all gardeners are invited to donate their excess harvested produce to the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry (848 Lake Street, OP - Enter via the parking lot on Kenilworth and knock on the window of the lower level marked by “delivery here”). You may deliver your produce donations in any kind of container at the following times: Monday (9AM—5PM); Tuesday (9AM—5PM and 6-7PM); Wednesday (3-5:30 PM); Thursday (noon—5 PM); Friday (9AM—10:45 AM); and Saturday (8:30 AM—noon). Join our community in this hunger awareness-raising effort and celebration - come, make meaning, be nourished. This event is free and open to the public but your reservation is required by September 30, 2011 to Fran Nolan in Mission & Ministry: fnolan@dom.edu. For more information or to volunteer to participate in this event, please contact: Susan Lucci, 708-955-7366 or smlucci@sbcglobal.net.

SUMMARY:Consider the Conversation on WTTW
DESCRIPTION: AUGUST 14TH @ 1 PM: SEE "CONSIDER THE CONVERSATION" ON WTTW, Channel 11 Not since Bill Moyers' "On Own Terms" was aired in 2000 has there been a better, more effective way to inspire meaningful dialogue and action about the care we wish to receive at the end-of-Life. This inspiring and provocative new film will be presented on Chicago PBS station WTTW on Sunday, August 14th at 1 PM. Please watch it or record it to view later, and again with the people you love. Then have that conversation. A powerful and moving documentary film examining how 21st century Americans live at the end of their lives, Consider the Conversation includes interviews with patients, family members, doctors, nurses, social workers, clergy and national experts from around the country. These voices of experience teach us that communication and preparation are the keys to preventing unnecessary physical, emotional, spiritual and social suffering at the end-of-life. The producers -- a hospice educator and a former Wisconsin State Teacher of the Year -- have three goals for this film: 1) to change the current American attitude from one that predominantly views end-of-life as a failed medical event to one that sees it as a normal process rich in opportunity for human development, 2) to inspire dialogue between patient and doctor, husband and wife, parent and child, minister and parishioner about end-of-life issues, and 3) to encourage medical professionals, healthcare organizations and faith leaders to take the lead in counseling others. Know that Consider the Conversation does not seek to hand down answers. Instead, it provides something far more important - the questions all of us need to contemplate. If you agree that this film needs to be seen by everyone you know, the Chicago End-of-Life Care Coalition (CECC) will help to plan a showing of the film for your organization or community followed by a facilitated discussion. Resources Download free state-specific advance directives forms, workbooks and information: www.nhdd.org Get more information and order a copy of the film: www.considertheconversation.org The Chicago End-of-Life Care Coalition Find information and resources on Advance Health Care Planning, Palliative care and Hospice care on our website at www.info@cecc.info

SUMMARY:Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Fall Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Consortium for Community Engagement or C3 represents a partnership between the Community Engagement and Research Cores of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. C3’s mission is to enhance the capacity of each institution by sustaining a coordinated and synergistic approach to community engagement and research. This approach includes advocating for authentic community-partnered research, guiding research translation and dissemination approaches and increasing faculty/community partner competence in community-based participatory research (CBPR). Aligned with this mission is our goal to create relevant, accessible, and effective programs that increase participation in and the use of health research by Chicagoland communities. The C3 CBPR Institute is intended for community-academic teams in various stages of their collaboration but will be most useful for newer teams, those new to CBPR, or those focused on a new collaborative project. This interactive skill-building institute is based on a curriculum developed by experienced community and academic partners in partnership with Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH). SUMMARY:Regional Symposium on HIV/AIDS for Faith Leaders
DESCRIPTION:If you weren’t able to attend our June 14 training, have no fear! We've uploaded the new FRA training manual to the AIDS Foundation of Chicago website at: http://bit.ly/framanual. Please feel free to download and use the manual as a resource in your work and share with others in the faith community. FRA will continue to host similar trainings/symposiums with the faith community this year in partnership with the Metropolitan Interdenominational Church Technical Assistance Network (MICTAN), a national clergy-led capacity-building faith initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 2000. MICTAN’s objective is to deliver trainings that equip faith leaders to mobilize around ending this 100% preventable illness. Attached is a Save-the-Date announcement for a free one-day regional Symposium on HIV/AIDS for faith leaders that will be held on Thursday, July 28. MICTAN has confirmed the Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr., as the Distinguished Preacher for this one-day event. For more information or to RSVP, contact Rev. Booker Vance (773) 266-8323 or Min. Debra Wilson (312) 405-7810. The AIDS Foundation of Chicago strongly supports this endeavor to enhance the provision of HIV/AIDS prevention education and testing services in our local area, and urge all of our faith partners to take advantage of this exciting opportunity. The Symposium also marks the beginning of the free, four-month capacity building seminars you will hear about during the event. We greatly appreciate your support and participation. If you’re on Facebook, please follow us at: www.facebook.com/faithrespondstoaids MICTAN Chicago Symposium Save-the-Date

SUMMARY:Fundraiser and Film Preview:Health, Community, and Food Awareness
DESCRIPTION:CEED@Chicago and Growing Films Present a Fundraiser for Health, Community, and Food Awareness Event Information The Center of Excellence in the Elimination of Disparities at Chicago (CEED@Chicago) and Growing Films invite you a reception and to learn about and support Illinois’ local and healthy foods movement. Enjoy local foods from the bountiful regional soil, preview the documentary Food Deserts in a Land of Plenty and learn more about food scarcity in Illinois and the solutions to this growing problem with a Community Forum featuring leading experts and community members. Event Timeline 5:30-6:30 p.m. – Local Food Reception with Live Jazz Ensemble Performance 6:45-8:00 p.m. – Screening of the documentary, Food Deserts in a Land of Plenty followed by Community Forum Film Synopsis: Food Deserts in a Land of Plenty The contrasting and converging landscapes of rural and urban Illinois provide the setting for a new movement of people reconnecting to their food. No longer able to rely on the presence of national grocery chains and distributors to bring fresh, healthy items into their “food desert” communities, residents of Grand Crossing on Chicago’s South Side and down state’s Bureau Valley begin collectively solving the problem through a new agrarianism. GROW turns a lens to activists, Chicago Public School students, single mothers, farmers and legislators helping to shape the developing regional food system by becoming urban rooftop growers, first generation farmers and public policy champions. Panel Information The panel includes Illinois Senator Jacqueline Collins who represents areas impacted by the “food desert” issue on Chicago’s South Side; Jim Braun, Co-Founder of the Illinois Food Farm and Jobs Council; Angela Odoms-Young of the University of Illinois who is focused on social, cultural, and environmental determinants of dietary practices and overweight/obesity in African-American adults and children; Johari Cole of Iyabo Farms is a Kankakee farmer from the Pembrook Community serving as Co-President of the Food, Farms, and Jobs Council; and Dameon Hillard, Judy Berryhill and daughter Anissa, community members from the Greater Grand Crossing area affected by the “food desert” issue and featured in the documentary. We especially welcome community members of all ages including children impacted by the food access issue in Illinois to come and share their experience. We will have a ten year old on the panel from the film. Additional Sponsors: Midwest Latino Health Research, Training and Policy Center Natural Direct Food More Information Please RSVP here or email info@growingfilms.com. Space is limited. $12 donation suggested. For any questions please email info@growingfilms.com. For event questions, contact Sarah Carlson at sarahacarlson@gmail.com. SUMMARY:The Intersection of Religion and Health Care
DESCRIPTION:Join Spertus and a prestigious panel of presenters to explore the role religion plays in medical and treatment decisions. Click here for more details. When we need to grapple with significant health issues, what shapes our focus and direction? How do we find comfort for ourselves? How can we be most helpful to the sick? How do we navigate the spiritual needs of family members while making the right medical decisions for ailing loved ones? What role does religion play in our answers to these questions? What roles do doctors and other medical caregivers play? Join Dr. James A. Tulsky, Rabbi Amy Eilberg, and Rabbi Dr. Eleanor Smith as they present their perspectives on how science and faith interact when we face challenging medical circumstances. Dr. James A. Tulsky is Director of the Center for Palliative Care and Professor of Medicine and Nursing at Duke University. Dr. Tulsky has published widely on doctor-patient communication at the end of life. His current research focuses on enhancement of communication between oncologists and patients with advanced cancer and identification of clinical, psychosocial, and spiritual trajectories of patients at the end of life. Rabbi Amy Eilberg is the first woman ordained as a Conservative rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. A leader in the Jewish Healing movement, she directed the Hospice Care Program at the Jewish Healing Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has written extensively on pastoral care, hospice, and spiritual direction, and is now at work on a book about Judaism and peacemaking. Rabbi Dr. Eleanor Smith served seven years as associate rabbi at Evanston’s Beth Emet the Free Synagogue before being called to the study of medicine, which she sees as an extension of her rabbinate. She obtained her MD from the University of Chicago in 2008 and is finishing a residency in Internal Medicine at Evanston Hospital. In July, she will become a fellow in Hematology/Oncology. $18 | $10 for Spertus members | $8 for students Or call 312.322.1773. The Alex and Klara Tulsky Symposium on the Jewish Future is an annual program that focuses on specific challenges facing the American Jewish community. Recent topics have explored identity, diversity, and the meaning of continuity in contemporary Jewish life.

SUMMARY:Health and Healing in Judaism
DESCRIPTION:Spertus is pleased to present a unique Graduate Certificate Program titled Health and Healing in Judaism. Health and healing are central issues today—in the medical and healthcare professions, in government and business, and in the many ways that healthcare decisions impact the personal and family lives of just about everyone. Debates over treatments, preventive strategies, ethics, and even spirituality have become flashpoints for political campaigns, medical research, and religious debate. What does Judaism have to say about health and healing? How can faith positively inform professional and personal medical decisions? And what can Jewish thought teach us about today’s complex, scientifically oriented medical world? The program consists of four graduate-level, credit-bearing courses that examine bioethics, biblical psychology, and the role of health and healing in Jewish theology and history. The courses are offered two at a time as part an intensive five-day seminar. Two were offered in March 2011 and will be repeated in March 2012. The other two will be in July. Faculty include Dr. Kalman Kaplan, Rabbi Dr. Peter Knobel, and Rabbi Dr. Byron L. Sherwin. Course descriptions and faculty bios. This program is designed for rabbis, chaplains, counselors, healthcare providers, hospice workers, Jewish communal professionals, and interested lay people, as well as students currently enrolled in the Spertus graduate degree programs. Participants must have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent prior to the start of the program. Tuition is $900 per course. To apply, please fill out this Online Application or contact Dr. Dean P. Bell, Spertus Chief Academic Officer, at dbell@spertus.edu .

SUMMARY:Worship in Times of Tragedy and Trouble
DESCRIPTION:The 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 falls on a Sunday this year--a unique opportunity for us as the church to engage a major cultural phenomenon. Tornados, earthquakes, fires and other disasters seem to be happening more frequently and create feelings of fear (could happen to us?), guilt (why not me?) and compassion (what can I do?) in our communities. How do we respond? Join us for a workshop to explore "Worship in Times of Tragedy & Trouble" on Saturday morning, July 16th, at Kingswood UMC in Buffalo Grove. Gathering and Refreshments start at 9:30. Program is 10 a.m. to 12 noon. We''ll participate in condensed versions of two model worship services and then share resources/ideas and reflect with each other on how we--as people of faith--convey God's Word in these troubling situations. This workshop is open to clergy and lay worship planners & leaders in all traditions. The Worship Work Area of the Northern Ilinois Conference (UMC) is planning and leading this gathering. Details on the attached flyer. Worship in Times of Tragedy flyer Please let us know if you plan to come (847-398-0770 or office@kingswoodumc.com) so we can prepare appropriately.

SUMMARY:Live White House Webcast: National HIV/AIDS Strategy
DESCRIPTION:An estimated 1.1 million people are living with HIV, but 1 in 5 does not know they are infected and more than half of American adults, ages 18-64 have never been tested. Faith and community–based organizations play a significant role in reducing health disparities and help work to solve some of our most complex health challenges, including HIV/AIDS. Through the first ever National HIV/AIDS Strategy, President Obama has charged the federal Centers for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to actively engage faith communities to address HIV/AIDS and promote prevention and early treatment. To address these issues, the HHS Partnership Center and White House Office for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships are hosting an evening webcast, live from the White House. This event provides a great opportunity for your congregation or community organization to host a watch party and join in the discussion on preventing and responding to HIV/AIDS in our communities, and supporting individuals living with HIV and AIDS. Prominent faith leaders and White House officials will discuss the importance of ending stigma around this disease, promoting prevention and early treatment, and increasing the number of people in communities who KNOW their status by being tested. Early testing and diagnosis is a key to prevention. Due to the nature of the webcast, there will not be an opportunity to ask questions during the discussion. If you have a question for a member of the panel, please email Partnerships@hhs.gov by 12:00pm on Thursday, May 26, 2011. Be sure to include, your name, organization and location. We hope you and your congregations will be able to join us for this important webcast discussion. SUMMARY:Just Eating? Practicing Our Faith at the Table
DESCRIPTION:Just Eating? Practicing Our Faith at the Table is a 7-week curriculum for Christian congregations that explores how practicing our faith is foundational to meaningful and healthy living, for ourselves, for the earth and for others in the world. In particular, the program asks us to consider how eating—one of the most basic human activities—is an invitation to experience God and to journey with others in the world. Learn to lead a Just Eating? series by attending the training listed below (or hosting one of your own). Each attendee receives the full set of Just Eating? materials, including a Leaders’ Guide, Readings for Action and Reflection, and an adaptation for Middle School students. The curriculum is soon available in versions culturally adapted for African American, Latino (in Spanish), and middle-school audiences. RSVP to Jessica.TheCenter@gmail.com.
