Faith-Based Caregiver Curriculum Facilitator Training

8:30 am — 4:30 pm

Mark your calendars! Caring Together, Living Better (CTLB) is offering a one-day facilitator training for our new faith-based training curriculum. As a trained facilitator, you will be able to help spouses, adult children, neighbors and other informal caregivers of older adults better manage the challenges of caregiving. The training program for caregivers has six sessions that can be taught to a group in about two hours each or the materials can be used to guide conversations with individual caregivers. This is a wonderful asset for any church older adult/caregiving ministry.

CTLB’s new curriculum was created by adapting “Caregiving Relationships,” a program developed by the University of Illinois Extension. The program includes topics such as effective communication, managing emotions and accessing community resources. CJE SeniorLife worked with the curriculum developers to incorporate the faith-based exercises CJE developed with assistance from the CTLB Leadership Council. The new version of the curriculum allows caregivers to explore how their faith can serve as a resource for self care.

The facilitator training will be held in Harvey on May 24 from approximately 8:30a.m.-4:30p.m. Please contact Sharon Stolz at sharon.stolz@ageoptions.org or (708)271-6251 to register.

Convenience Stores – How Big Tobacco Targets Youth

Host: Illinois Coalition Against Tobacco

May 24, 10 -11 am CST

 Guest Presenters:

Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids

Meg Riordan, Director, Policy Research

Ann Boonn, Research Manager

This webinar focuses on the report, Deadly Alliance: How Big Tobacco and Convenience Stores Partner to Market Tobacco Products and Fight Life-Saving Policies.  As other forms of tobacco marketing have been restricted, tobacco companies now spend more than 90 percent of their marketing budget — nearly $10 billion a year — to advertise and promote tobacco products in the retail environment.  Tobacco companies pay stores billions to ensure that cigarettes and other tobacco products are advertised heavily, displayed prominently and priced cheaply to appeal to both kids and current tobacco users.  In this webinar, participants will learn about how the tobacco industry utilizes convenience stores to maximize youth exposure and to prevent passage of tobacco policies.

Guest Presenters:

Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research

Steven Sussman, PhD

Professor, Preventive Medicine and Psychology

University of Southern California

For more than 10 years there was a steady decline in youth smoking rates, but recently declines are negligible and appear to be stalled.  Preventing youth tobacco use is complex and requires a multi-component approach .  What works for teens, may not work for kids in middle school and what works today, doesn’t work 100 percent of the time.  Dr. Sussman, a principal investigator in several prevention programs, will briefly describe the research on available programs and outline the key components needed to counteract tobacco industry influence.
